So. California trip: April 11th, 2010 -- San Diego

My parents took the 6:30am shuttle to the airport, which I didn't notice, thanks to my earplugs. Wendy and I got up ~8:20am, and made a visit to the extremely crowded, poorly supplied breakfast buffet. After a long wait in line, we filled our plates (forget about the line for the waffle machine), ate, and returned to clean out our room. We were hoping to meet up with Nick in the morning for lunch, but given the aweful traffic situations, and our schedule to drive to San Diego, we settled on a phone call visit, then hit the road for San Diego.

Traffic was smooth, and we hit the outskirts of S.D. in a couple hours. La Jolla Cove, just north of the city, was our first destination. I noticed signs for Torrey Pines, and thought of Tiger Woods winning the PGA tour with an injured leg. Since it was just a mile away, we made a visit to the lodge and golf shop. If I was a golfer, I'm sure I would have been more excited. On to the ritzy coastal town of La Jolla...

Parking was tough to find, but eventually we lucked out and found a spot near the seal beach...

Pelican's were resting on rocks, while the seals slept on the beach. A few seals played in the surf...

We walked north along the Cove, enjoying the coastline...

Conveniently, it was low tide, and the tidepools where filled with anemones and some small crabs...

We continued on to some rocks where several seals were posing (left side of pic)...

Not sure why a couple of seals were holding their heads high the entire time we watched. Looked like they were trying to cool off their necks, or had found a unique sleeping position...

Several pelicans started making fly-bys over the water...

They were moving pretty fast, but the Canon 70-200mm f4 IS lens did a good job capturing them...

We checked out some restaurants during our walk back to the car, but decided to head to our hostel first, and look for something in that area. The San Diego Point Loma hostel was located a mile from Sunset Beach, and had a fun beach/surfer theme. We dropped off some luggage in out cute room on the 2nd floor, and then headed towards the beach.

The chill vibe of the hostel made me feel like I was on a Patagonia or Norway adventure. I'm finding that the friendly vibes at hostels add a lot of intimacy and character to the overall experience of the town I visit. Even if that means having someone's socks hanging up in the hallway...

Even though the temp barely broke 60 degrees today, it was still warm enough under the sun to dip our toes in the ocean. We followed with some toss on the beach (I'm wearing my new Wires in the Walls shirt)...

We had dinner at a casual family style place along the beach. At first we were going to sit outside, but it got cold and windy as the sun sank below the clouds. Later at the hostel, we rested on the giant hammock in the courtyard...

We stumbled onto a grocery store near the hostel, and bought food to make breakfast tomorrow. The forecast is for rain tomorrow, and we're not sure if we should visit the zoo. We'll have to see how the weather turns out.
